A Place in Heaven

Scripture: John 14:2, ‘In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.’

Observations: Jesus has just told his disciples not to be afraid, but to trust in him, and now he tells them why. He is about to return to the Father i.e. heaven, and he wants to reassure his disciples about their future destiny. Jesus describes heaven as a huge house, one with many rooms. The point is that there is room for all of God’s children. The phrase ‘if it were not so, I would have told you,’ seems a little strange. I suppose the point Jesus is making is that they should always have known that there would be room in heaven for them. Then Jesus says he is going there i.e. he is about to return to heaven, and he will prepare a place for them. And that’s exactly what Jesus is doing now, he is in heaven, at his Father’s side, preparing a place for his people. Jesus assures his disciples that not only is there room for them in heaven, but that each and every child of God will have their own special place in heaven, prepared by Jesus himself. Jesus’ point is that our real home isn’t here on earth, rather it’s in heaven.

Application: Do you picture think of heaven as your true home? Do you picture Jesus preparing a place for you? Do you truly believe that when you die you will be coming home? In Hebrews 11 it says that what made certain people heroes of the faith is that ‘they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth (v13)’ and that ‘they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. (v16)’ It’s not that we hate this life, rather it’s just that we recognize that the next life will be better, and so we aren’t quite as attached to this one as other people are. Is that how you live, looking forward to the day when you are called home to be with the Lord?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I believe that Jesus, as my Lord and Saviour, has gone on ahead of me to prepare a place for me in Your heavenly Kingdom. I believe that there is a place specially prepared for me. Lord, help me live my life as if I was a stranger on this earth, as if soon I will get to go home. Lord, may I long for the day when I get to see Your Son, Jesus face to face, when I can truly thank Him for his sacrifice that gave me life. Help me to live this life confident of my eternal destiny. Give me boldness, fill me with joy and hope, give me an urgency to do your work with the awareness that my time on this earth is short. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
