An Alliance Against God

Scripture: Psalm 83:5, ‘With one mind they plot together; they form an alliance against you.’

Observations: There are certain Psalms that ask God to destroy Israel’s enemies, known as imprecatory Psalms, of which Psalm 83 is one. So firstly, who is the ‘they’ in this verse? The Psalmist lists off the surrounding nations: Edom, Moab, the Hagrites, Gebal, Ammon, Amalek, Philistia, Tyre and Assyria. All of Israel’s historical enemies have ‘plotted together,’ and ‘formed an alliance.’ They ‘conspire against God’s people, (v3)’ ‘that the name of Israel be remembered no more. (v4)’ And so the Psalmist asks God to do to them what he did to Israel’s other enemies, to nations like the Canaanite king Jabin and his commander Sisera (v9-10, see Judg 4-5), and the Midianite kings, Oreb, Zeeb, Zebah and Almunna, (v11, see Judg 6-8). The Psalmist asks God to make the surrounding nations ‘like tumbleweed, (v13)’ to ‘pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your storm. (v15)’ How do we understand such Psalms? It helps to understand that in plotting against God’s people, they are in fact plotting against God. They have formed an alliance against God. The Psalmist finishes, ‘Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord— that you alone are the Most High over all the earth. (v18)’

Application: When people reject the message of Jesus Christ, or us as Christians, they are in fact rejecting Jesus. Jesus said, ‘he who rejects you rejects me; and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me. (Lk 10:16b)’ And later ‘there is a judge for the one who rejects me. (Jn 12:48)’ And Paul writes, ‘But for those who reject the truth there will be wrath and anger. (Rom 2:8)’ Paul even says about his letters, ‘he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God. (1 Thess 4:8)’ In opposing God’s rule people, whether that’s Jesus, or Christ’s body, the Church, they place themselves under God’s wrath.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, when people oppose the gospel, and they reject Jesus, or they reject Your will, help me not to take it personally, but help me see how they are rejecting You. Lord, help me to make them understand what their rejection leads to, an eternity separated from You and Your love and grace. Lord, may I warn them of the consequences of their sin, but Lord, may You let them know that you are the Most High God. Lord, their judgment is in Your hands. May You get the glory. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
