Be Still

Psalm 47:2
How awesome is the Lord Most High,
the great King over all the earth!

Be Still

Observations: This Psalm is all about praising God. The Psalmist calls all nations and peoples to clap their hands and shout to God with cries of joy (v1) and to sing praises to God (v6). And the reason why is because God is awesome, he is the great King over all the earth. The word awesome, means more than just amazing, rather it refers to God’s Majesty and Mighty power, to which the only response is awe. For God has subdued the nations (v3) and reigns over them (v8), and all the kings of the earth belong to him (v9). When the Psalmist calls the Lord ‘Most High’ he means that God is above all other gods, ‘he is greatly exalted. (v9)’ This Psalm reminds us that God rules over all the earth, and he alone deserves our worship.

Application: Often we think that our government rules our nation, or we look at the world powers and think they rule this world, but nothing they do is outside God’s sovereign purposes. One day every leader, every world power, will humble themselves before God. We need to remember that God is King over this world. We need to remember that if we live in peace and prosperity it comes from God, and we ought to thank him. And if we live in times of persecution and poverty, that God is also in control and he will vindicate those who are faithful to him.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You are the Lord Most High, You are the great King over all the earth. Lord, I stand in awe of who You are and the things You have done. Lord, forgive me when I forget that You are in control and all things work according to Your will. Although You are not the author of evil, nothing happens in this world that is outside Your purposes. Lord, may I worship You in the times of blessing as well as the times of difficulty. May I praise Your name in all things. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
