Scripture: Psalm 100:3, ‘Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.’
Observations: The five verses of psalm 100 are some of the most joy-filled verses in the Bible. It tells us to make a joyful noise to the Lord (v1), to serve the Lord with gladness (v2), to enter his gates with thanksgiving (v4), for the Lord is good, steadfast and faithful (v5). In the center of the psalm is this phrase ‘know the Lord.’ It’s an invitation to have a relationship with God. There are three things that we should know about the Lord. Firstly, that he is God, the only God. Secondly, that he made us and therefore we belong to him. And thirdly that we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. While everyone belongs to God, not everyone has a relationship with God, not everyone recognizes him as God. That is why it’s so important to proclaim the Lord. Jesus echoes these same words when he says ‘I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own and my own know me. (Jn 10:14)’ Later Jesus commands Peter to ‘feed his sheep. (Jn 21:17)’ When we put our faith in Jesus’ death on the cross for our sins we become one of God’s people, the sheep of his pasture.
Application: Do you know the Lord Jesus Christ? Do you believe that he is God, that he made you, and that through faith in him you now belong to him? Do you consider Jesus as your shepherd and yourself as one of his sheep? There is an amazing peace that comes from knowing that ‘you are not your own, but that you belong, body and soul, to your faithful Saviour. (Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 1)’ Today, as you go about your normal daily activities, remember that you belong to God, that you are his, and that he is God.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, because of Your Son, Jesus Christ, and His death on the cross for my sins, I am no longer separated from You, but I can come into Your presence, as Your child, as one of Your sheep. Lord, may I live today as someone who belongs to You. Lord, help me live today in the joy of Your salvation. Help me to be Your child and witness in this world. Lord, forgive me sins and help me serve with gladness. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
