Confess Your Sins

Scripture: 1 John 1:9, ‘If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.’

Observations: John presumes that we all sin. In fact he says, ‘If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. (v8)’ The point is not whether we sin, but what we do with our sin, and according to John we are to ‘confess our sins.’ The Greek word for ‘confess’ is homologeō, which is made up of two words homo (same) and logeō (speak). It basically means to speak the same, or to agree about something. In this case it means to agree about our sinfulness before God. When we confess our sins to God John says ‘he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.’ Because God is faithful to his promise in Christ he will forgive our sins. And because God is righteous he will cleanse us from all unrighteousness. The Good News of the Bible is that through faith in Christ Jesus all our sins are forgiven and washed away.

Application: Do you confess your sins to God? Do you do so in only a general way, or are you specific about your sin? Do you trust that in Jesus God will forgive your sins and make you clean? Do you believe that when God says that his Son paid for all your sins on the cross that he is faithful to that promise and that all your sins have been dealt with on the cross? Do you know the peace and hope that comes form being cleansed from all unrighteousness? Ask God to help you confess your sins to him and to experience the assurance that they have indeed been forgiven in Christ Jesus.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I confess my sins to You. I confess that so often I don’t acknowledge You in my day, but that I get consumed by lesser things. I confess that I don’t take opportunities to bring You honour and glory because I am afraid to stand out, or I’m too busy pursuing my own desires. I confess that my thoughts, my attitudes, my words and my behaviour are often dishonouring to You. Lord, I ask that in Jesus, and through His blood spilt on the cross that You forgive my sin and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Lord, make me clean and fill me with Your Spirit so that I might live for You and not for myself. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
