Scripture: Psalm 92:1-2, ‘It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night.’

Observations: This seem like the obvious purpose of the psalms, to sing God’s praise, but it is good to be reminded that singing God’s praise isn’t something we only do on Sundays. The psalmist tells us to do three things, for three reasons. We are to ‘give thanks to the Lord’, we are to ‘sing praise to his name,’ and we are to ‘declare’ these things both morning and night. And we should do so because ‘it is good,’ because of his ‘steadfast love,’ and because of his ‘faithfulness.’ So firstly, why is it good to give thanks to God and sing his praises? I think the psalmist would say because God is good. God id worthy of our thanks and our praise, not only because he is ‘the Lord Most High,’ but also because of the things he has done for us. We need to be reminded that God is good and it is good to thank him and praise him. Secondly, it is good to declare God’s steadfast love in the morning. It is good to remind ourselves at the beginning of the day that in Jesus God loves us more than we could ever imagine, and that his loving presence will be with us throughout the day. Thirdly, it’s good to declare God’s faithfulness at the end of the day. It is good to remind ourselves how God has shown his love to us throughout the day.

Application: Do you thank God and praise God every day? Do you start the day by reminding yourself of God’s great love for you in Jesus Christ? Do you finish the day by declaring how God has been faithful to you throughout your day? Do you begin and end your day thanking God for his goodness, and praising him? This is not just a good spiritual discipline, it is just a good thing to do. As we bless God he also blesses us. As we remember God’s goodness, his love and faithfulness, we are encouraged and strengthened to serve him and give him the glory that he is due.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father I want to thank You for who You are, for You are the Lord, You are God Almighty, God Most High, You created the universe, You created me, and through Jesus Christ I can call You my Father. There is nothing more good and right than to praise Your name, for You are worthy of all honour and glory, of all power and wealth. Lord, may I begin each day remembering Your great love for me in Jesus Christ who gave his life for mine on the cross. May those truths go with me throughout my day, encouraging me to remain firm in temptation, to serve You with joy, and face difficulties with hope and peace. And Lord, at the end of each day may I declare Your faithfulness, that You are good, that You have upheld me, that You will never let me go. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
