Do you have a Healthy Heart?

Scripture: Proverbs 14:30, ‘A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.’

Observations: This proverb compares a healthy heart, with a heart filled with jealousy or envy. A healthy heart, or a heart at peace, brings life, whereas a jealous heart destroys our mental, emotional and physical health. Jealousy eats away at a person, so that not only does their heart become twisted but it also impacts their physical health. A healthy person processes such emotions in a healthy way, repenting of sinful emotions, or expressing godly emotions in a godly way (2 Cor 11:2-3).

Application: How healthy is your heart? What negative emotions have control of your heart, and are slowly eating away at your well-being? What are you angry about? What makes you jealous or envious of others? How has bitterness, or unforgiveness impacted your life? And more importantly what are you going to do about it? I would encourage you to reflect on the health of your heart, and confess anything that needs confessing. If you can’t seem to root out negative emotions I would encourage you to talk to someone else about it i.e. a counsellor. Don’t allow negative emotions to ruin your emotional and physical well-being.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I confess that sometimes I experience emotions that I don’t process well, and they begin to eat away at my heart, producing unhealthy thoughts and attitudes. Lord, help me recognize sinful emotions and help me to confess them, especially spiritual pride, when I look down on others as if I’m better than them. Lord, give me a healthy heart that honours You, and keep sin far from me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
