Do You Have a Holy Body?

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4, ‘It is God’s will that you should be sanctified; that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honourable.’

Observations: If you ever wondered what God’s will for your life is here it is right here – God wants you to be sanctified. God’s will for our lives is that will be holy. And if that isn’t specific enough for you Paul goes on to describe how we can be holy – we should avoid sexual immorality. The word for sexual immorality is actually the word we get pornography from. It includes anything outside of a healthy sexual relationship between a man and a women within the bond of marriage. And of course Jesus made it clear that sexual immorality isn’t just what we do but it begins in our heart and in our thoughts i.e. lust (Mt 5:28). Rather than sexual immorality we ‘should learn to control our body in a way that is holy and honourable.’ The operative word there is ‘control.’ Elsewhere Paul talks about ‘beating his body in order to make it his slave. (1 Cor 9:27)’ The point is that we control our body and it’s desires, not the other way around. And we should use our body in a way that is holy, or set a part for God, and honourable. In fact, we should offer our bodies as living sacrifices holy and pleasing to God (Rom 12:1).

Application: Are you avoiding sexual immorality? It’s not easy in our culture that bombards us with sexually explicit images, and tells us that it’s okay. Would God consider your sexuality holy and honourable? But even more than that, would God consider how you use your body holy and honourable? And that doesn’t just mean do you exercise and eat healthy, rather it means have you set your body apart for the Lord, do you use it to honour him? Do you use your energy to serve others? Do you use your hands to help those in need? Do you use your feet to spread the gospel? Do you use your eyes to see injustice, and your mouth to speak out?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, so often I spend most of my energy in avoiding what’s wrong, rather than investing my energy in doing what is right. Lord, protect me from temptation by the power of Your Holy Spirit, and instead help to use my body in a way that is holy and honourable. May my life be an instrument of righteousness in Your hand. May I give my life in service to You. Lord, use my hands and feet to bring Your love to others. Use my mouth to speak Your words and sing Your praises. May my body be a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
