Do You Have a Noble Character?

Scripture: Proverbs 31:10, ‘A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.’

Observations: This section of Proverbs (31:10-31) describes the ideal wife, a wife who is hard working and shrewd in business dealings, who cares for her husband and children, and is respected by her family and society. However, what makes her most desirable is her ‘noble character.’ This ‘character’ is noble, not because it meets the particular ideals of men, or even the ideals of society, but because she ‘fears the Lord. (v30)’ A woman who honours the Lord is worth far more than rubies. And this is true not just for her husband, or even society, but it is also true for God – God values a woman who honours him. And what is true for woman is also true for men. God cares about men’s character, and values those who honour him.

Application: Firstly, for husbands, do you value your wife, not just for her beauty (which is fleeting), not just for her hard work, but for her character, for her love for Jesus Christ? And for both men and women, how noble is your character? Do you fear the Lord? Do you seek to honour Jesus in your life? A life lived to honour God is a life that is of great blessing to those around them. Also someone who is valued by God is of great value to God’s children.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, may my worth be found not in what I do, but in my desire to honour You. Lord, may my character be defined by my faith in Jesus Chris, by my desire to please him and obey his will in my life. Lord, may I be a good spouse, who in valuing You, becomes someone worth valuing. Lord, forgive me when I value people from a worldly perspective, because they are powerful, or popular, or because of outward beauty, rather than because of their character, because they love You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
