Don't be Decieved

Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4, ‘Do not let anyone deceive you in any way. For the Day will not come until the final Rebellion takes place and the Wicked One appears, who is destined for hell. He will oppose every so-called god or object of worship and will put himself above them all. He will even go in and sit down in God’s Temple and claim to be God.’

Observations: Apparently the Church in Thessalonica had heard of a prophecy, report, or letter from Paul saying that the Day of the Lord had already come (v2), and so Paul writes to them telling them not to let anyone deceive them. Paul wants them to be clear that Jesus will not return until certain events happen. The most significant of these event he calls the ‘Rebellion.’ The rebellion will take place when ‘the Wicked One appears.’ Elsewhere the Bible refers to this individual as the antichrist. While the Spirit of the antichrist is alive and well, in this case Paul is referring to a particular individual who will oppose every other religion and claim to be God. Paul goes on to say that the Holy Spirit is holding back this individual (v7), but that at some point he will allow the Wicked One full reign in order to deceive those who are perishing (v10-12). However, when Jesus returns this individual will be overthrown and destroyed (v8).

Application: Rather than using this information to try and determine the timing of the Day if the Lord, Paul’s point is that we should ‘not become easily unsettled or alarmed, (v2)’ or let anyone deceive us. As Christians we should be able to see through the spirit of the antichrist, because we are walking in step with the Spirit of Christ. Because we believe the truth, we are not among those who are deceived and refuse to love the truth. The question we have to ask ourselves is how well do we know the truth, what God teaches in the Bible? Are you able to see through Satan’s lies and the subtle ways he likes to twist God’s words?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I know that You are not the source of evil for You are good and the source of all good, and yet You allowed evil to enter this world in order to show Your infinite mercy and love to the undeserving. And in the context of Your Sovereign plan You allow evil, even the spirit of the antichrist, to affirm the faith of Your people and to deceive those destined for destruction. Lord, help me to stand firm in the face of Satan’s lies, and help me cling to the truth. Lord, fill me with Your Holy Spirit that I may not be deceived. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
