Don't Blame God

Scripture: Proverbs 19:3, ‘A man’s own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the Lord.’

Observations: Consistently through the book of Proverbs it has taught the consequences of folly, and here is no different. According to this proverb a foolish person ruins his life. The point is that we have no one to blame for our own decisions and our behaviour than ourselves. We made the wrong choice and we have to live with the consequences. But the truth is that we aren’t keen to take responsibility for our own actions, instead we prefer to blame someone else. We blame our upbringing, or our circumstances, or bad luck, or in the case of this proverb – the Lord. We say stuff like, ‘If God loved me, he wouldn’t have let this happen!’ So often we blame God for the things that we did or didn’t do.

Application: While a lot of things happen in life that is outside our control, we need to take responsibility for those things that have done, or could’ve done, but didn’t. What things should you be doing that you aren’t? What things shouldn’t you be doing that you are? Don’t blame God for those things, take responsibility for your own actions (or inactivity). Confess your responsibility for the things that haven’t gone right in your life, and ask God to help you make the right choices.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, so often the things I struggle with in life, aren’t the things that I have no control over, but are things that I am too selfish or too slack to do. Lord, the thing that stops me from living a life full of joy and purpose is myself. Lord, I confess that I don’t do the things that I know I should and could do, and instead I do the things I know I shouldn’t. Lord, thank You that in Christ I am forgiven, and thank You for giving me Your Spirit that I no longer have to follow my selfish sinful desires, but can instead live a life that brings You honour and glory. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
