Don't Forget

Scripture: Psalm 103:2, ‘Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits.’

Observations: Psalm 103 is probably one of my favourite Psalms. What I like most about this Psalm is how it proclaims the love and grace of God. In all the Old Testament this Psalm proclaims the Good News, that ‘The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. (v8 to pick just one awesome verse out of so many)’ In verse 2 the psalmist calls us to not forget all the Lord’s benefits. He goes on to list those benefits, God ‘forgives all our sins and heals all our diseases. (v3)’ God ‘redeems our life and crowns us with love and compassion. (v4)’ God ‘satisfies our desires with good things and renews our youth. (v5)’ God ‘works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. (v6)’ And the list just goes on and on. And for all these things and more we are to praise the Lord. And not just with our lips but with our soul, with ‘our inmost being. (v1)’

Application: It is so easy to forget the benefits that we receive from God in Jesus Christ. The truth is that often all we can see are the things that we experience in this life and we forget our new spiritual reality in Christ. Rather than define our lives by our financial poverty, we need to define it by our spiritual riches. Rather than define our lives by our physical ailments, we need to define it by our glorious inheritance. Rather than define our lives by our failures and failings, we need to define our lives by the love of God for us in Jesus Christ, and the fact that we have been adopted as his sons. Don’t forget the benefits that are yours in Jesus today, and don’t forget to praise God for them.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, the truth is I too quickly forget the benefits that I have through faith in Your Son Jesus Christ. Lord, I focus on the little things that are right before me and I forget your amazing love and grace towards me in Jesus, and I forget the glory that awaits me. Lord, help me to live my life full of hope and joy and peace, because that’s what You have given me. Lord, may I praise You with all my soul, with all my inner being, for You have been so good to me. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
