Don't Give In

Scripture: Proverbs 1:10, ‘My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.’

Observations: A father is giving his son advice, and his advice is ‘if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.’ Some people feel that the book of Proverbs is very secular in its wisdom, but here we see anything but. The issue here is not ‘stupid’ choices, but ‘sinful’ choices. The word used here for ‘sinners’ is the Hebrew word Ḥaṭṭa which is always translated as ‘sin,’ as not just doing what is wrong in the eyes of the world, but what is wrong in God’s eyes. Later the father calls it ‘sin (v16, a better translation would be ‘evil’)’ The truth is that sin appeals to our sinful nature, it entices us. We like the idea of having power over other people (v11-12), of becoming rich (v13), and going with crowd (v14). But only a fool would give in to what is wrong in God’s eyes, for the truth is that sin will be punished, and the ultimate punishment for sin is death (v18-19).

Application: It’s so easy to say, ‘don’t give in to sin,’ but it’s so difficult to do. If it was easy we’d all be perfect, but the truth is we are far from perfect, because we give in to sin all the time. Firstly, we need to be aware of the cost of sin. Don’t be fooled into thinking it won’t hurt anyone, because sin hurts both God and us, as well as others. Secondly, don’t resist sin in your own strength, but turn to God for help. The Bible says, ‘God will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear …he will provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (1 Cor 10:13)’ Thirdly, remember that temptation doesn’t last forever. In fact, the Bible says, ‘Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (Jam 4:7)’ See it for what it is, seek God’s help, and trust that he will help you.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I ask that You give me discernment to know when I am being tempted, that I might see it for what it is, ‘sin.’ Lord, help me to resist the enticement of sin, that I might not give in to temptation, but that with the help of Your Holy Spirit I might reject whatever is contrary to Your will. Lord, may I not set foot on the path of sin, but may I remain on the path of righteousness. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
