Don't Reject God's Wisdom

Scripture: Proverbs 1:23, ‘If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.’

Observations: In this section the writer moves from a father giving advice to his son (v8-19), to wisdom calling out for people to listen (v20-33). Here ‘wisdom’ is personified as a woman who ‘calls aloud in the street, (v20) “…how long will fools hate knowledge?” (v22)’ The point of this passage is that if we want to find wisdom it isn’t a hard thing to do. Wisdom is found in the fear of the Lord (v29). In the New Testament James writes, ‘5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. (Jam 1:5)’ The point is, if you turn to God he will give you wisdom. Or in the words of the Proverb, if we respond to God, he will ‘pour out his heart to us and make his thoughts known to us.’ God desires to reveal himself to us, and in the pages of the Bible he has. God wants us to know how we ought to live, how we ought to reflect his glory, or his character, in our lives.

Application: God has clearly communicated how he wants us to live, how we are to put him first in our lives, and yet we ignore God’s wisdom for life and do life our own way. We reject the call of wisdom because we love our foolish ways. We need to repent of our sin and turn to God. And when we do God will pour out his love into our lives through Jesus Christ, and he will reveal himself to us through his word and Spirit. It’s only in relationship with God that we ‘will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm. (v33)’

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, everything I need to know about You is found in Your word. Lord, forgive me when I ignore Your wisdom and do life my own way. Lord, help me to fear You and put You first in my life. Lord, help me to constantly put my faith in Jesus Christ. May I keep in step with Your Spirit. And Lord help me grow in wisdom, in the understanding of who You are and how You want me to serve You in this life. Pour out Your heart and Your thoughts into my life, that I might become more like You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
