Dust to Dust?

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 3:20-21, ‘All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. Who knows if the spirit of man rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?’

Observations: This may have been a question in Solomon’s time, but since then God has made it clear that the spirit of man doesn’t just cease to exist when we die. About 500 years later God revealed to the Prophet Daniel, ‘Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. (Dan 12:2)’ And Jesus often talked about the resurrection of the dead. Solomon has been talking about how in the end we are no different from animals, but the truth is that we do know that our spirits rise upwards to stand before the throne of God. It’s interesting that even in Solomon’s life they knew that men are just glorified dirt. Only the fact that we have a soul gives life meaning. While our bodies return to dust our soul continues (which will be reunited with our resurrected body).

Application: Do you believe that you are more than just dust? You may feel that you are more, but unless you believe in the soul or spirit, than the reality is you’re still only dust. According to the Bible you have a spirit, or soul. The question we all have to ask is where will our soul spend eternity, with God in heaven, or without him in hell? The real question is: do you know if your spirit will rise upward to heaven, or down to hell? Again according to Scripture the only way we can be certain is by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus said ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (Jn 14:6)’

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You have made me to be more than just dirt, You have given me a soul, so that I can live with You for all eternity. Lord, I thank You that You have made it clear that there is more than just this life. And Lord, I put my faith in Your Son, Jesus, that he may reconcile my spirit with You, that I may look forward to the day when I will be raised to eternal life and dwell with You forever. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
