Eternal Life Today

Scripture: 1 John 5:11-12, ‘And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.’

Observations: John has been talking about our faith in Jesus Christ (v1-5), and how we come to faith through the testimony of the Holy Spirit (v6) and the sacraments (v7-8). And now he explains what this testimony is: that ‘God has given us eternal life.’ That is the hope of our Christian faith, that death has been defeated, that we will no longer face the consequences of our sin. And eternal life is only possible because of our faith in God’s Son, Jesus Christ. John makes it as simple as possible, ‘He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.’ If you believe in Jesus you have eternal life, if you don’t believe in Jesus than you don’t have eternal life. There’s no middle ground. Jesus said ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (Jn 14:6)’ We only receive eternal life through faith in Jesus. In fact, John says we only receive life through faith in Jesus. The truth is that without Jesus we are dead in our sins, but in Christ we have life, life in this life as well as the one to come.

Application: If you have put your faith and hope in Jesus Christ then you have eternal life. You don’t have to worry about what will happen when you die, because you have been given eternal life. Jesus said, ‘He who believes in me will live, even though he dies. (Jn 11:25)’ Even more, Jesus gives us this new life now. We are no longer slaves to sin, we are no longer defined by death, but through the Holy Spirit we can begin to live the life God always planned for us right here and now. Eternal life is all about living with God, and we can begin that life today as God lives in us through his Holy Spirit. Do you believe that you have eternal life? And are you living that life today?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You that through faith in Your Son, Jesus Christ, that I have eternal life. Lord, may I never doubt that truth, that in Jesus everything that once separated me from You, and from life, has been dealt with on the cross. And Lord, help me remember that this isn’t something that I will receive sometime in the future, but something that I have now. Help me to live this new life that I have today through the power of presence of Your Spirit in my life. May the life that I will live in heaven start today. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
