Every Day is God's Gift

Scripture: Psalm 104:27-29, ‘These all look to you, to give them their food in due season. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. When you hide your face, they are dismayed; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.’

Observations: This Psalm speaks about the providence of God, how God provides for all living things. The word ‘these’ refers to the beasts of the field (v11) and the birds of the air (v12), livestock and humanity (v14), lions (v21), and creatures of the sea (v25). God gives all of these ‘their food in due season.’ The Psalmist doesn’t see the abundance of this world as chance, but as God’s provision. God opens his hand, and his hands are filled with good things. When the Lord turns his face towards us (Num 6:24-26) we experience his blessing, we receive life and sustenance. But when God hides his face, all good things vanish. The Psalmist talks about God ‘taking away our breath.’ God has the power over life and death. But even more than that the Psalmist hints that without God there is no life, without God life cannot exist.

Application: If you are reading this, it is because God has given you the breath that you are breathing, your sight to see, your mind to think, and this day to live. Everything that we so often take for granted comes from God’s hand. And we need to ask why has God given us this day? What does God want me to do with this day? It’s easy to over-spiritualize the answer to that question. I think God wants us to live today, to eat, to work, to enjoy life. But I also think it’s easy to under-spiritualize it. I think God wants us to acknowledge him today. I think God wants us to honour him today, to serve him, to bring him glory, to worship him. As the Psalmist says, ‘I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord. (v33-34)’

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for giving me this day, for giving me breath and for providing for all my needs. Lord, I am sorry that I treat Your good gifts as common place, that I take for granted all the good things that You give me every day. Lord, I am undeserving of Your grace and yet You pour it out into my life with amazing generosity. Lord, in response to Your goodness I will live this day for Your glory. I want to give my life in service to You. I will praise You not just this day, but everyday that You give me breath. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
