Glorified

Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 1:12, ‘We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.’

Observations: Paul has just prayed that God may count them worthy of his calling and that he may fulfil every good purpose of theirs and every act prompted by their faith. And the reason why he prays this is ‘that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him.’ The first reason why Paul wants God to work in their lives is so that Jesus will receive the glory. Jesus told his disciples, ‘let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (Mt 5:16)’ Our lives are meant to bring glory to the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Secondly, Paul wants God to work in our lives so that we may be glorified in Jesus. Paul sees the evidence of God’s activity in our lives as assurance that those whom God has justified in Christ he will also glorify (Rom 8:30). As God makes us more like Jesus it assures us that one day we will be like Jesus (Phil 1:6). Finally, Paul sees all this as ‘according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.’ God’s activity in our lives is always an act of grace.

Application: Are you seeing God’s activity in your life? Is God making you more like his Son, Jesus Christ? Is your life bringing glory to the name of Jesus? Paul reminds us that not only is this the purpose of our life, but that he will accomplish it, that we will be glorified in Christ. If we are seeing evidence of God’s activity in our lives it shouldn’t result in spiritual pride, but in gratitude for God’s grace.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You that by Your grace You have saved my from my sin in Christ Jesus and given me eternal life. But I also thank You that by Your grace You are making me more like Jesus, that my life may bring glory to His name. And by that same grace I know that You will one day glorify me, that You will make me new and I will be like Jesus. Lord, as I look forward to that day may I live for You and Your glory each day. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
