God is Better

Scripture: Psalm 84:10, ‘Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.’

Observations: The Psalmist starts, ‘How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty. (v1)’ He yearns to go to the temple and worship God (v2). For those who praise God are blessed (v4). And he describes those who travel to Jerusalem going from strength to strength until they appear before God (v5-7). His point is that there is nothing better than to trust in God (v12), there is nothing better to worship God, there is nothing better to be in God’s presence. In fact, ‘one day in God’s courts’ is better ‘than a thousand elsewhere.’ He would prefer to be the least person in God’s employ, the ‘doorkeeper,’ ‘than dwell in the tents of the wicked.’ He would prefer to be the least as long as he is favoured by God, than the greatest without God’s favour.

Application: How much do we value God’s presence, his blessing and favour? Would we give up everything else as long we had God? Would we value everything else as nothing ‘compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus? (Phil 3:8)’ Would we do anything it took to make sure we could spend time in God’s presence worshipping him with his people? Sometimes I think we have a very small view of God and therefore we desire him little. Or we live our lives with a bit of God and a bit of something else. God’s rightful place is to consume our hearts, soul and mind. God is better than 1,000 good things, let alone anything that is tainted by sin.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You are good in a way that nothing else I know or have ever experienced is good. You are loving in a way that I have never experienced love from anyone else. You are better than anything else I have ever desired. Lord, You are more worthy of worship than anything else in heaven and earth. Lord, forgive me when I’d prefer an hour with a good book instead of an hour with You. Lord, grow in my heart an understanding that nothing in this world compares to You. That You are better than anything else I could desire. Lord, may I be the least in Your Kingdom, as long as I get to have You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
