God is Light

Scripture: 1 John 1:5, ‘This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.’

Observations: After establishing who Jesus is John moves on to Jesus’ message, ‘God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.’ According to John this is what Jesus taught his disciples and what his disciples were to declare to the world. It’s interesting that we don’t find such a statement by Jesus recorded in the Gospels. John does say that id everything Jesus did and said was written down the world wouldn’t have enough books to record them all (Jn 21:25). However, Jesus does talk about himself being the light. For example, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. (Jn 8:12)’ And ‘I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. (Jn 12:46)’ John loves to use contrasts, especially between light and darkness. Here light stands for purity, or goodness, whereas darkness stands for impurity, or sin. John’s point is that God is holy and perfect, there are no imperfections in God, there is no sin, or evil in him. And John makes the point that the same should be true of us, ‘If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. (v6)’ Later he writes, ‘This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. (2:6)’

Application: If we truly believe that God is light, that God is pure and holy, without sin, then to live in relationship with God we must do two things. Firstly, we must put our faith in Jesus, so that his perfect obedience might be granted to us, so that we might be declared holy and righteous even though we aren’t. Secondly, out of gratitude for our salvation in Christ we must choose to be holy like God is holy, to live as children of light. I encourage you to confess the darkness in your life this morning and ask God to fill you with light so that you can walk as Jesus did.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I know that nothing evil exists in You, that in You there is no darkness at all, and yet I confess that there is darkness in my life, in my thoughts, my words and my deeds. Lord, I am not holy like You. And so I confess my sin again this morning, and ask that by the blood of Jesus Christ You will cleanse me of all my sin, that You will wash away the darkness in my life and make me clean. Lord, fill me with Your Spirit that I might be holy as You are holy, that I may walk as Jesus did. May my life bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
