Hearing only what I want to Hear

Scripture: Micah 2:11, ‘If a liar and deceiver comes and says, ‘I will prophesy for you plenty of wine and beer,’ he would be just the prophet for this people!’

Observations: Micah has a very low opinion of false prophets. He prophesies that God is coming to judge his people and take them off in exile, but the false prophets say, ‘Do not prophesy about these things; disgrace will not overtake us. (v6)’ While Micah says that God is planning disaster, the false prophets say, ‘Is the Spirit of the Lord angry? Does he do such things? (v7)’ As far as Micah is concerned such people are ‘liars and deceivers.’ They don’t speak the truth, and they certainly don’t speak God’s truth. In fact, Micah says if they prophesy ‘plenty of wine and beer,’ it would be exactly what the people want to hear. The false prophets say only what the people want to hear, and the people only want to hear that God will bless them, that God will give them whatever they want, that God will condone their sin and rebellion. Micah on the other hand is ‘filled with the Spirit of the Lord… to declare to God’s people their transgressions and sin. (3:8)’ Micah must speak the truth, because only the truth will lead God’s people to repentance. God isn’t going to give his people plenty of wine and beer, rather he will bring disaster and calamity.

Application: Like the people of Micah’s time, we too prefer to hear what we want to hear. We prefer to think that we are good people who deserve God’s blessing. We too think that God exists to give us what we want, whether that’s material possessions, or comfort and security. But the truth is that God will not stand idly by and ignore our sin and disobedience. We cannot treat God as a divine vending machine. Rather we need to respond to what the Spirit tells us. If he convicts us of sin then we must repent. Rather than justifying our sin we need to repent of it.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, help me to take seriously the sin that is still part of my life. Lord, forgive me when I try and justify my sinful behaviour, when I say things like it’s not hurting anyone else, or I can’t help it, or it doesn’t matter, because it matters to You and it hurts You. Lord forgive me also when I use You to get what I want. And Lord, help me to remember that the blessings You give are not my right, but are evidence of Your undeserved grace. May I always be thankful and grateful for Your loving kindness. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
