Higher than I

Psalm 61:2b-3
I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.
Higher than I
Observations: There is no context given for this Psalm, and it appears to be just a general cry for help. The Psalmist calls out to God in the midst of some trouble that is causing him distress. The phrase ‘my heart grows faint,’ seems to indicate that he feels overwhelmed and afraid. But rather than despairing he turns to God in prayer, and asks God to ‘lead me to the rock that is higher than I.’ The Psalmist knows that there is something greater than himself, somewhere he can go in times of trouble. God is his rock, his ‘refuge, a strong tower against the foe.’

Application: Where do you go when you feel overwhelmed? Who do you turn to when you realize that things are beyond your control? Do you recognize God’s sovereignty, that he is higher than anything else, that he is greater than you, that he is greater than your circumstances? Is Jesus the rock on which you have built your life, because only a life built on Jesus can stand against the flood (Mt 7:24-25).
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You are my rock, my refuge, my strong tower, for You are higher than everything else. Lord, forgive me when I think that I am the lord of my life, when I think I am greater than You. Lord, I turn to You because You are in control, You are Sovereign over my circumstances. Lead me to Your Son Jesus Christ, who has done all that is needed, who has defeated sin and death on the cross, and reconciled me with You. He is my rock and my refuge and I trust in Him. In His name I pray. Amen.
