I am in the Father

Scripture: John 14:10, ‘Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.’

Observations: Jesus makes the most grandiose claims, claims that on the lips of anyone else would have them thrown into an insane asylum. The claim that ‘the Father is in me,’ by which Jesus means that God is in him is quite consistent with some sort of religious delusional state, but the claim that ‘I am in the Father,’ is on another level entirely. How can a man be ‘in’ God? Jesus isn’t just a man in whom God dwells, rather he is the God-man, fully human and fully divine. And even more than that he is the second person of the Trinity, not just God in man, but the man who is also in God. And because he is the God-man, his words aren’t just a man’s words they are God’s words. And his actions aren’t just those of a man, they are God’s work. In Jesus we see the fullest expression of God’s revelation, and God reveals himself as someone beyond our wildest imagining.

Application: Do you believe that Jesus and the Father are both One and distinct i.e. Three-in-One? But even more than that do believe that Jesus’ words are God’s words, that the things Jesus did are the work of God? When Jesus says ‘You are my friends, (15:15)’ it is God saying we are his friends. When Jesus lays down his life for us on the cross, it is God who dies for our sins. In Jesus we hear God speak and we see God at work. That’s why we call Jesus Lord and submit our lives to him because he is Yahweh in the flesh, God Almighty, Maker of the Heavens and the Earth. Will you submit yourself to him today?

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, I believe that You are in the Father and that He is in You. I believe that everything You said are the very words of God, and that all that You did was Your Father working through You. And I believe that You, with Your Father and the Spirit are reigning over all things, and so I submit myself to You as my Lord and King. Lord, help me serve Your purposes today, that all that I do might bring You glory and honour. May Your love be in my heart, Your name on my lips, and Your will be lived through my life. In Your name, for Your glory I pray. Amen.
