I Have Been Redeemed

Scripture: Micah 6:4, ‘I brought you up out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. I sent Moses to lead you, also Aaron and Miriam.’

Observations: The book of Micah begins with God acting as a witness against his people. God has seen their sin and judged it. Once again God returns to the court room and asks his people to plead their case (v1) and to hear his accusation (v2). God’s charge is found in verses 10-12, a short ephah, dishonest scales, false weights, violence and deceit. They think that sacrifices and offerings will cover over their sins (v6-7), but God wants is justice, mercy and humility (v8). God doesn’t understand why they would ignore his will, after all, he had ‘redeemed them from the land of slavery.’ God had rescued them. God had made them his people, and yet they ignored his will. God gave them leaders like Moses and Aaron and Miriam, but still they ignored him. God protected them and provided for them (v5), but they still took matters into their own hands, using dishonest means to provide for themselves.

Application: What does it mean to belong to the Lord? Paul writes, ‘You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. (1 Cor 6:19-20)’ That’s what it means to be redeemed, to be purchased. God bought us with the blood of Christ, we now belong to him. And because we belong to God we are to bring honour God. Because we belong to God we are to be like God. We serve God, not because it is our duty, but because he saved us. We owe him all that we are, not out of obligation, but out of gratitude. God has given us everything that we need, therefore we give him all that we have.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You redeemed me from an eternity separated from You. You rescued me from hell, and You have given me eternal life, and I now belong to You. Lord, forgive me when I bring dishonour to Your name, when I live contrary to Your will, when I use religion to try and repair our relationship. Lord, help me to trust in the blood of Jesus Christ alone to pay for my sins. Help me to remember that I now belong to You. Help me to honour You in all that I do. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
