If it's the Lord's Will

Scripture: James 4:15, ‘Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”’

Observations: James is comparing an ungodly attitude with a godly attitude. An ungodly attitude says, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money. (v13)’ Whereas a godly attitude says, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.’ James isn’t so much concerned with where we live, how long we live there, or how much money we make, but whether it is the Lord’s will or not. James talking about the Lord’s will in two ways. Firstly, it is the Lord’s will whether we live or die. The truth is that our life is like a mist that appears in the morning and just as quickly vanishes (v14). That’s why building God’s Kingdom is a far better business option, because God’s kingdom is eternal, while our kingdom lasts a few decades if that. Paul motto is, ‘to live is Christ. (Phil 1:21)’ Life isn’t about serving our own interests, but God’s interests. Secondly, it is the Lord’s will what we do. Whatever we do we need to do through the lens of God’s word. There are certain things that we know God desires from us i.e. to love him, to read his word, to pray, to encourage his people, to do good to others etc. But there are also certain things that we ought to seek God’s will about i.e. who to marry, what work to undertake, how to plan our day etc. James’ point is: are we living with a God focus, or a self focus?

Application: Instead of planning out today according to your desires and plans, how about starting the day by asking God what he wants you to do today. And instead of being focused on getting your tasks done, ask God how he wants you to do your tasks. Ask yourself, ‘If Jesus was to return today, would he find me serving him or myself?’

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, instill in me an constant awareness of Your glory and presence, that I might not be distracted by the my mundane life, or the monotony of my activity, but that I might be aware of who has given me my life and breathe, and who I am serving. Lord, forgive me when I become consumed by my desires, and forget You and Your desires. Fill me with Your Spirit, that I might seek Your will, and do what pleases You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
