Is Your Soul Getting Along Well?

Scripture: 3 John 2, ‘Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.’

Observations: John refers to Gaius, the recipient of this letter, as ‘dear friend,’ or beloved, a term he often uses to describe fellow believers (he uses this term 6 times in 1 John to refer to believers in general). He tells Gaius that he prays that he might ‘enjoy good health.’ The word in Greek is the same word we get hygiene from. But in the Greek the main phrase is John’s wish that ‘all may go well with you.’ This is a very unusual word. It is rarely found in Greek literature, but is often found in the Greek version of the Old Testament (the Septuagint, or LXX). It means to travel well, or have a good journey, and it recognizes that to do well in life is a gift from God. John has heard how Gaius is faithful to the truth and walks in the truth, which is evidence of the Spirit’s activity in his life. Things are going well in his life and within his soul because of God grace working in him. And John is praying that God would continue to bless Gaius in this way. In the Greek the emphasis is on the good spiritual life that comes from God (the first two clauses are wishes, whereas the third clause is a fact).

Application: Are you seeing God working in your life? Do you see good health, and a good life, and spiritual health as gifts from God? And do you desire these things for your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ? We often pray for good health, but even more importantly we should be praying that our souls and the souls of others would be healthy. Jesus makes the point, what good is it if we have a good life but forfeit our souls (Mt 16:26)?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that through Your Holy Spirit that I will grow in spiritual health. Lord, make me more like Jesus, give me strength to stand up in temptation, and protect me from evil. Lord, I thank You for the many ways You have blessed me, for my good health and the good life that I have, but neither of these things are as important as a life that brings You honour and glory. And Lord I pray that You will not only give good health and good things to my brothers and sisters at Westside, but that You will give good health to their souls, that You will continue to breathe new life into them, that their lives may also please You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
