It Will Go Better

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 8:12, ‘Although a wicked man commits a hundred crimes and still lives a long time, I know that it will go better with God-fearing men, who are reverent before God.’

Observations: What Solomon sees and what he believes are often two different things. What he sees are wicked men who are not brought to justice though they commit a hundred crimes. Their lives are not brought to an end, rather they live a long time. But what Solomon believes is ‘that it will go better with God-fearing men, who are reverent before God.’ This seems at odds with Solomon’s previous words that it makes no different if we are righteous or wicked, the same fate, death, over takes them both. But Solomon tempers that view by suggesting that those who are reverent before God will not only have it better in this life, but also in the life to come. He says in the following verse that ‘because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not lengthen like a shadow. (v13)’ According to Solomon it will go better for those who fear God and it will not go well for those who don’t.

Application: While life might not always turn out as we expect it to, one thing we can be certain, for those who fear God it will go better than for those who don’t. The general principle is this: if we do life God’s way, it is more likely to work out as God intended, but if we ignore God’s way then we will face the consequences. And what is a general principle for this life is a fact in the life to come – it will not work out well for those who do not fear God, they will experience God’s wrath for their sins. But for those who fear the Lord, they will experience God’s grace in Jesus Christ. So fear the Lord and know his blessing in this life and the next.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, life hinges on You. Without You this life has no meaning, it is filled with pain and struggle, but a life that revere’s Your name finds peace in this life and the next. Lord, help me trust that living life Your way is the better way, even when this world says differently. Lord, may nothing sway me from honouring You, for You are faithful and good, You are loving and gracious, and You will honour those who honour You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
