Jesus' Claim to be God

Scripture: John 10:33, “We are not stoning you for any of these,” replied the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”

Observations: Jesus is again in the Temple area teaching and he again uses the metaphor about sheep, however he goes a step further and makes the comment, ‘I and the Father are one. (v30)’ Immediately the Jews pick up stones to stone Jesus (v31) and Jesus asks for which of his miracles are they stoning him (v32). The Jews respond that they aren’t stoning him because of his miracles, ‘but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God (or make yourself God).’ The Jews have no doubts about what Jesus is saying. Even though Jesus was a man just like them, he was claiming to be equal with God. Jesus defends himself by quoting Psalm 82:6, where God refers to humanity as ‘gods. (v34)’ If God can call people ‘gods’ surely ‘the Christ’ God’s holy one sent into the world, can be called ‘God (v35-36)’ Jesus again makes the same point that he is equal with God when he says ‘the Father is in me, and I in the Father. (v38)’ It is one thing to say ‘the Father is in me,’ for there are times in the Old Testament when God’s Spirit came on certain people and they prophesied or performed God’s work. But it’s something else to say ‘I am in the Father!’ Again the Jews try and kill Jesus but he escapes their grasp (v39).

Application: These verses define Jesus as both ‘a mere man’ and as ‘being equal with God.’ You can’t sit on the fence with Jesus, either he is God incarnate (God in the flesh) or he is a raving lunatic, he can’t just be a good person. Because the Jews did not believe, Jesus had to die, he wasn’t good in their eyes, rather he was the worst of sinners, someone who dishonoured God. What do you believe about Jesus? Do you believe Jesus is God come into the world in order to save sinners through faith in his death on the cross?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, everything hangs on what I believe about Jesus Christ, that He is Your Son, that He is One with You, that You are in Him as He is in You. I believe that Jesus is You come into the world to pay the price for my sins. I believe that in Jesus You showed how much You love me, that You would come down out of heaven to die in my place. Lord God, I put my faith in Jesus Christ, and I submit my life to him as my Lord and God. I honour Him as I Honour You, for You are One and He is equal with You, One in glory and majesty, in holiness and perfect righteousness, and worthy of all praise and honour. May my life reflect my faith, in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
