Jesus Gives Life

Scripture: John 5:21, ‘For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.’

Observations: The Jews accuse Jesus of ‘making himself equal with God and try to kill him (v18), but Jesus responds, not by denying the fact that he is equal with God, but by showing them how he is equal with God. Most Jews in Jesus’ day believed in the resurrection of the dead, and so Jesus says, ‘just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.’ Just like God has power over life and death so Jesus has power over life and death. Just as God has the right to choose who will receive eternal life, so Jesus chooses whom to give eternal life. Jesus shares God’s power and authority, because he is God. In fact, Jesus is subtly warning the Jews that if they want life they must recognize Jesus, for he is the source of all life. To reject Jesus is to reject eternal life. Later Jesus says, ‘He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. (v23)’ And, ‘whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life… he has crossed over from death to life. (v24)’

Application: There is no life apart from what we receive from Jesus. The truth is that without Jesus our lives are on the broad road that leads to death and destruction. Without Jesus we approach death a little more each day. But through faith in Jesus Christ we are on the narrow road that leads to life, and because of Jesus each day we draw nearer to eternal life. And the promise of life is not just in the future, but it’s now. We can begin to taste the new life we have in Jesus today. Ask Jesus to fill you with his life, that he might transform your life, that you might taste the joy and hope and peace that will be yours for all eternity.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You came into our world in the person of Jesus so that You could rescue me from death and give me life. Lord, because of Your Son I have eternal life. And so I ask that You might fill me with Your Holy Spirit that this new life that I have in Christ might impact my daily life. Lord, may I begin to see You now as one day I will see You face to face. Lord, may I begin to know You now, even as then I will know You fully. Lord, may I serve You now even as then I will serve You completely. Lord, may the life of Jesus become my life today. In His name I pray. Amen.
