Jesus is God

Scripture: John 1:1, ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.’

Observations: The Gospel of John has some of the most profound statements in all of Scripture, and the very first verse is one of them. John starts his Gospel with the same two words as the Greek Old Testament (the Septuagint), en arche, which in English is ‘In the beginning.’ John sees the coming of Jesus as a new beginning for humanity. In fact he later makes the point that Jesus was instrumental in both beginnings, creation and redemption (v3). John refers to Jesus as ‘the Word.’ It was by the word that God created the universe in Genesis, but also the word refers to God’s wisdom, or revelation of truth, especially in the book of Proverbs. Jesus is God’s word about himself. Jesus knows all about God because he ‘was with God.’ But even more than that, Jesus knows about God because he ‘was God,’ who became flesh and dwelt amongst us (v14). John, in his usual poetic way, makes it clear that Jesus isn’t just a special person, he is Immanuel, God with us. Because the Bible consistently talks about Jesus as God, and the Holy Spirit as God, the church developed the concept of the Trinity, that God is three-in-one.

Application: The gospel is that God came down into our world in the person of Jesus Christ in order to die on the cross for our sins so that we could be reconciled with God. Jesus is not just a good person, or a wise person, or a miracle worker, he is God in the flesh. It was because he proclaimed to be equal with God that he was crucified (Jn 5:18). Do you believe that? And if you do it will change everything. Believing in Jesus Christ means submitting to him as your Lord and Saviour. Life becomes about pleasing him and obeying his will. We don’t identify with Jesus because he has the answers to life’s questions like some guru, but because he is Almighty God who is our only hope in life and death. Have you accepted Jesus as God?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, the Good News is that even though I deserve Your condemnation and anger, You instead sent Your Only Son to pay the penalty for my sin and grant me eternal life. Jesus who has always been with You, who is You, humbled Himself in order to save a messed up sinner like me. If that isn’t true to worship Jesus would be blasphemy, but because it is true I will worship Him with all of my strength for all of my days. When I fall so far short of the glory that You deserve I ask that You forgive me through Jesus Christ Your Son and my Saviour. Lord, fill me with Your Holy Spirit that I might proclaim the glory of Jesus Christ. In His name I pray. Amen.
