Keep Far From Sin

Scripture: Proverbs 5:8, ‘Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house.’

Observations: Proverbs 5 is all about avoiding adultery, or keeping the 7th Commandment (Ex 20:14). And the father’s advice to his son is to keep as far as possible from temptation, keep to a path far from an adulteress, do not even go near the door of her house. And the key words there are ‘keep far from her,’ and ‘do not go near.’ The point is that as followers of Christ we should avoid situations that may lead to sin. I once heard someone say that if sin is a cliff, it’s stupid to walk along its edge hoping we won’t fall. Instead we should walk well back on solid ground. Someone else said that sin is like wrestling a sumo, and the only reason it seems so impossible to beat is because we keep feeding it – we need to starve the sumo. That’s what proverbs 5:8 is all about, not just reducing the risk of sin, but avoiding it altogether. And remember this doesn’t just apply to sexual sin, but any sin. If you struggle with alcohol don’t hang out in bars. If you struggle with over-eating don’t have biscuits, cakes, or chocolate in the house (not even in case people come over).

Application: What issues, or situations do you need to keep far from and not go near? What things tempt you? I would encourage you to write it down: _______________. How can you keep far form that thing? What things can you put in place to help you avoid that temptation? Maybe you could share that plan with someone who will hold you accountable, or you can stick it in your weekly schedule to remind you to stay strong. Whatever the case stay far from temptation and don’t go near sin.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You know the things that tempt me, and the things that draw me away from You. Lord, please forgive me, and by the power of Your Spirit help me to keep to a path far from such things. Lord, help me to think only of things that are noble and good. Lord, help me to only speak what is pleasing to You. And help me to do only what brings You glory and honour. May I stay far from temptation and not go near sin. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
