Keep Holy and Blameless by God

Kept Holy and Blameless by God

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:23, ‘May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.’

Observations: When Paul says ‘may,’ he’s not expressing a wish as if he’s uncertain whether God will do this, rather he’s expressing a desire, this is what he wants God to do. Paul calls God, ‘the God of peace.’ Despite all the commands that Paul has just give (15 of them), God isn’t a God who is trying to make things hard or difficult for us, rather he’s a God who brings peace into our lives. Doing life God’s way isn’t a burden, but a joy. Paul wants God to do two things for us as followers of Christ. Firstly, he wants God to ‘sanctify’ us through and through. Sanctify means to make holy, or to make us like Him. Secondly, Paul wants God to ‘keep’ our ‘whole spirit, soul and body blameless.’ The word ‘keep’ is a very active word, which is often translated as guard, as in to watch something in order to keep it safe. Paul mentions our spirit, soul and body, to reinforce the idea that God watches over all of our life, what we think, feel and do. And the point is that God will keep us safe until Jesus returns. God holds onto those he calls to faith in Jesus Christ. That idea is further reinforced by the next verse, because God is faithful.

Application: Firstly, is this what you desire God would do for others? Do you want God to sanctify and keep safe your brothers and sisters in Christ? And is this something you want God to do in your own life? Do you want to become more like God, to be holy? Do you want to be blameless in spirit, soul and body, when Jesus returns? How do you work with the Holy Spirit in achieving that? Maybe you could use the tools that the Spirit provides – Scripture, prayer, fellowship, worship, service etc. Pray this morning that today that the Spirit will help you be holy and blameless.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, I thank You that in Christ Jesus I am holy and blameless in Your sight, that You do not hold my sin against me, but that You have washed it away in the blood of Jesus Christ, my Saviour. But Lord, I want to please You, I want to be like You. So I ask that You will make me holy like You are holy. Help me to think like You think, speak like You speak, and act like You have acted towards me. Lord, keep me safe until the day I meet Jesus face to face. In His name I pray. Amen.
