Knowing God through Jesus

Scripture: John 17:3, ‘And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.’

Observations: After Jesus teaches his disciples for three chapters he turns to God in prayer. He asks God to ‘glorify your Son that the Son may glorify the Father, (v1)’ since the Father has given him authority to give eternal life (v2). And then Jesus explains what eternal life is. And it’s not something you earn, rather it’s something you receive. And it’s not about what you do, but about who you know. And according to Jesus you need to know two people: the Father, ‘the only true God,’ and the Son, ‘Jesus Christ’ whom the Father has sent into the world. This is the only time that Jesus calls himself the ‘Christ’ in the Bible. Up until this point Jesus has been avoiding the public eye, but now it’s time for him to be crucified and so he speaks plainly to his disciples. The word ‘know’ implies a relationship with someone, it’s not just ‘knowing’ about someone, it’s knowing them intimately. If we want to receive eternal life then we need to have a relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ the Son. In fact, we often disconnect the two ideas thinking eternal life is separate from relationship with God, but they are one and the same – to have a relationship with God through Jesus is eternal life.

Application: Do you have a relationship with Jesus Christ? Do you believe that he is the second person of the Trinity i.e. God in the flesh? Do you believe he died for your sins? Do you believe that through faith in him you have been reconciled with God and you have eternal life? There is no eternal life apart from a relationship with God through Jesus. It’s not about what you do, you can’t earn it, when you put your faith in Jesus you receive eternal life. If you believe in Jesus than your eternal future is guaranteed. I want to encourage you to live today in light of your eternal destiny. Live today in relationship with God, because that is your eternal destiny.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, because of what Jesus Christ has done on the cross for me I have a relationship with You, I have eternal life. May my relationship with You today reflect the relationship that I will enjoy for the rest of eternity. Lord, forgive me when I become consumed with worldly and temporary things, rather than what has eternal significance. Lord, forgive me when I make life about myself rather than about You. Lord, fill me with Your Spirit that I might live in constant fellowship with You, that I might honour You in my thoughts, that I might raise You with my lips, and worship You with my life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
