Life to the Full

Scripture: John 10:10, ‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.’

Observations: The second half of this verse is probably one of the most quoted verses from John’s gospel, Jesus words that he has come to give life, and life to the full. But rarely do we hear the previously words, that ‘the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.’ The truth is that the ways of this world lead to eternal destruction. We see that in the rule of people like Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot, they stole from the people, killed those who opposed them, and destroyed everything else. Jesus on the other hand wasn’t like that, he came that we might have life. The picture here is of the blessings of Jesus’ kingdom. And Jesus makes the point that this isn’t just eternal life (quantity), but a full life (quality), life as it was meant to be. True life is that which is found in giving our lives to the King who gave his life for us. In this sense Jesus is the gate (v7,9a), ‘whoever enters through me will be saved. (v9b)’

Application: Finding satisfaction in life by any other means than Jesus Christ is futile. Those things may satisfy in the short-term by ultimately they lead to death and destruction. Only Jesus is the gateway to finding a full-life, a life that not only lasts forever, but a life that is truly satisfying. Whenever I am presented with a choice between doing life as the world does it, or as God’s wills it, I need to remind myself that the world’s way may seem great but it leads to destruction, but while God’s way may seem difficult it leads to life. I will pursue my joy and my satisfaction in following Jesus.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, open my eyes to the subtle temptations of this world to drag me down into death and destruction and instead open my eyes to Your promises and the life that You want for me. Lord, fill me with Your Spirit that I might stand up against the world, and instead stand for You. May I find my hope and my joy and life to the full in Your Son, Jesus Christ and what He has done for me on the cross. In His name I pray. Amen.
