Listening When God Disciplines

Scripture: Leviticus 26:18, ‘If after all this you will not listen to me, I will punish you for your sins seven times over.’

Observations: God wants us to listen to him. In this case he wants us to listen to two things. Firstly, he wants us to listen to his will, to carry out his commands and obey the terms of the covenant (v14-15). If we will not listen to God and do what is right he will punish us. Secondly, God wants us to listen to his disciple. If we do not listen to him he will continue to punish us until we do listen. Over and over God asks us to listen to him in this chapter (v14,18,21,23,27) because if we don’t there will be consequences. And the point isn’t punishment but God’s desire that we repent. God wants us to recognize that we are being disciplined and he wants us to confess our sins and return to him (v40-46).

Application: How well do you listen to God? God speaks mostly through his word, the Bible, but he also speaks through our circumstances, through the Holy Spirit, and through other people. Are you listening to what God is saying to you? God has called you to be different from the rest of the world, he has called you to put him and his will first and foremost in your life, but are you listening to him? According to the Bible, ‘God disciplines us for our good that we may share in his holiness. (Heb 12:10)’ What areas of your life might God be challenging you and calling you back to him? Don’t ignore God’s discipline, but confess your sin and start living how God wants you to live.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, as I read Your word may I hear Your voice speaking to me. Lord, open up my heart so that I will listen to Your word and let it change my life. Lord, help me to not listen to the world and the lies of the Evil One, who want to distract me from Your purposes and will for my life. And Lord, when You discipline, may I hear what You are saying to me and heed Your correction. Help me to discern Your voice from all the other competing voices in this world. Lord, may I listen to You alone, because You have the words of life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
