Living in the Last Days

Scripture: Micah 4:2, ‘2 Many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.’

Observations: Micah’s prophesy makes a sudden turn from destruction and judgment to the promise of a new future. Micah moves to the near future, to ‘the last days,’ when ‘the mountain of the Lord’s temple will be established as chief among the mountains. (v1)’ According to Micah in that day, ‘many nations will come to the mountain of the Lord.’ And they will come because God ‘will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.’ Over and hundred years later another prophet Ezekiel says that God ‘will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you… I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. (Ezek 33:26-27)’ God himself will teach his people how they ought to live. In fact God’s will, his law and word, will go out from Zion, the mountain of the Lord. The unspoken idea is that it will go out to the ends of the Earth. Micah is painting a picture of the church, when Zion and Jerusalem become the centre of human history, not because of the temple, but because of Jesus who was crucified on Golgotha, Jesus who was God come to dwell (tabernacling) with humanity. The last days are those when the Spirit came upon God’s people to teach them how they should live. The last days are those when the gospel goes out to the ends of the earth.

Application: We live in the last days. And as Micah prophesied the mountain of the Lord has indeed become the chief mountain, the place where Jesus died for the sins of the world. We live in the time when the nations are coming into the church, and are being taught God’s will by the Holy Spirit. We live in the time when the gospel is going out to the ends of the earth. Have you gone to the cross of Christ? Are you filled with the Holy Spirit? Are you taking the gospel out into our world? Like Micah says in verse 5, ‘All the nations may walk in the name of their gods; we will walk in the name of the Lord our God for ever and ever.’

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, no matter what anyone else does, I live in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. My hope and peace are found in his death on Calvary. My assurance comes from the Spirit who dwells within me. My purpose is found in proclaiming the gospel. Lord, forgive me when I walk according to the world’s ways instead of Yours. May I constantly turn towards Your Son, Jesus, may Your Spirit fill my life and transform it, may I be faithful in building Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
