Living in the Shadow of God Almighty

Scripture: Psalm 91:1, ‘He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.’

Observations: The psalmist communicates three ideas in this verse. Firstly, he talks about ‘dwelling,’ or ‘abiding.’ These words describe the place where he lives, this is his home, where his heart is. Secondly, he talks about ‘the shelter,’ or ‘the shadow,’ which expresses a place of safety. In the next verse he talks about ‘my refuge and my fortress. (v2)’ Thirdly, he describes God as ‘the Most High,’ and ‘the Almighty.’ God is Sovereign over all things, he is all-powerful. The psalmist’s point is that his place of safety is to find his home in God. The whole psalm expands on that idea. God will deliver him from snares and sickness (v3), he will find safety under God’s wings (v4). We need not fear anything ‘Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place. (v9)’ God will even send his angels to protect us (v11-13). The Psalm finishes with a promise from God that those who ‘hold fast to me in love, I will deliver him, I will protect him, I will answer him, I will be with him in trouble, I will rescue him and honor him, with long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation. (v14-16)’

Application: Is God your place of safety, are you sheltering in the shadow of the Almighty? Is God where you have found a home for your heart, are you dwelling, or abiding, in him? Are you holding fast to God in love? But do you also believe that God is ‘the Most High, the Almighty?’ Do you believe that you have put your trust in the One who is in control of all things, who has promised to deliver and protect you, to answer your prayers and be with you in trouble, who will rescue you and show you his salvation? When you put your trust in the Lord, your trust is not misplaced. When we step out into this new day we do so with the Most High, God Almighty at our side.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You promise to those who hold fast to You in love that You will protect them, that You will answer their prayers, that You will be with them in trouble, that You will deliver and save them. So Lord, I ask that today You will protect me from the evil one, that you will be with me through Your Holy Spirit, that I might know Your love and grace towards me in Jesus Christ. Lord, I have made You my hope and my home. May I find shelter in the shadow of Your wings. Lord, may I never forget that in Christ You are at my side, and You are God Most High, that You are Almighty, and that I need not fear anything. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
