Living like Jesus

Scripture: 1 John 2:6, ‘Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.’

Observations: After talking about the negative side of the Christian life, the problem of sin, John turns to the positive side of following Jesus, obeying his commands. According to John ‘we know that we have come to know [Christ] if we obey his commands. (v3)’ If we don’t do what Jesus commanded we don’t know Jesus (v4), but if we obey his word ‘God’s love is truly made complete in us. (v5)’ John connects a personal and intimate knowledge of Jesus with obedience. Jesus said the very same thing, ‘If you love me, you will obey what I command. (Jn 14:15)’ The language of obedience sounds so dry, but it flows not just out of duty, but out of love and gratitude for what Jesus has done for us. And even more than that, our obedience to Jesus reflects Jesus’ obedience to the Father. We are to live as Jesus lived. The Bible often uses the term ‘walk’ as a metaphor for living. The point is that we are to do what Jesus did. Our obedience is not to tick something off a list, rather it flows from our desire to be like our Saviour.

Application: Are you living like Jesus? That doesn’t mean wearing sandals and becoming a rabbi. Rather it means having the same values as Jesus. It means living for God’s glory and doing the will of our heavenly Father. It means putting other people before ourselves and even laying down our lives for the sake of others. It means humbling ourselves. It means being passionate for God’s honour. It means loving God with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength. Living like Jesus means putting God first in everything, our thoughts, our decisions, our words and our actions. If you know Jesus are you walking like he did?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, help me to walk like Jesus walked. Help me to become more like my Saviour who gave His life for mine. Lord, forgive me when I walk like the rest of the world, according to my own desires. Lord, may I not pursue my own pleasures, but what pleases You. May I not obey my sinful desires, but Your holy and perfect will. Lord, through the power of Your Holy Spirit make me more like Jesus every day. In His name I pray. Amen.
