Living Water

Scripture: John 4:14, ‘Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’

Observations: On his way to Galilee Jesus goes through Samaria and stops at Jacob’s well to rest. There he meets a woman and asks her for a drink, and when she questions his motives he tells her that if she knew who he was she would’ve asked him for a drink and he would’ve given her living water. When she asks what this living water is Jesus explains that unlike normal water which doesn’t truly quench our thirst, when we drink the water that he gives will never thirst again. In fact, it ‘will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’ The problem with God’s people is that they had rejected God ‘the living water’ the one who sustained them and gave them life, and instead had dug their own wells, they had looked for life and purpose elsewhere, however those wells could not hold water (Jer 2:13). And now Jesus promises that in him their relationship with God would be restored. Once again God would live in them through the Holy Spirit, and where the Spirit lives there is life, and not just new life, but eternal life. Jesus promises that once the Holy Spirit lives in us our thirst for communion with God will be fulfilled.

Application: The truth is that we too often look for spiritual fulfilment and meaning in all the wrong places, or we don’t truly drink from the Spirit and seek to supplement our supply form elsewhere. However, unless we are filled with the Spirit our spiritual thirst will never be quenched. Only through faith in Jesus and through the work of the Holy Spirit are we reconciled with God. Any other hopes, any other paths, any other things will leave us thirsting for more. Have you come to Jesus and received from him the living water of the Holy Spirit?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, there is nothing in this world that will truly satisfy except You. Lord, You are the source of life, not just this life, not just life to the full, but life that fulfills for all eternity. Help me to put my faith in Jesus Christ alone. Protect me from the subtle temptations of this world, with its wealth and pleasures that promise fulfilment but never truly deliver. Lord, help me turn away from sin and turn towards Your Son, Jesus Christ, who gives Your Spirit freely. May I drink from the living water and find life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
