Living Waters Flow

Scripture: John 7:38, ‘Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.’

Observations: Jesus’ brothers try and convince Jesus to go and make a name for himself at Jerusalem, but Jesus tells them his time has not arrived, and so he goes in secret (v1-13), and waits until the middle of the feast to start teaching people (v14-36). The religious leaders issue a warrant for his arrest because Jesus goes quiet until the last day of the feast, which may have been the 7th or 8th day, when he stands up and declares, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.’ And then he declares that ‘streams of living water will flow from within’ those who put their faith (or believe) in him. In the next verse John makes it clear that Jesus is referring to the coming of the Holy Spirit here. Jesus is the source of the Holy Spirit who brings life into the lives of those who believe that Jesus is the Christ. Only by trusting in Jesus do we receive the Holy Spirit and receive eternal life (see John 4:14).

Application: The first obvious application is: do you believe in Jesus? Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God? Do you believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins, so that you may be forgiven and reconciled with God? The second application flows form the first. If you do believe in Jesus then he will give you the Holy Spirit, and streams of living water will flow from within you. If you believe in Jesus then you can know the assurance that you have eternal life, for the Spirit gives life, the Spirit is our deposit guaranteeing our eternal inheritance. Do you see evidence of these streams of living water in your life? Do you see God’s life come bubbling out of you and flowing into the lives of those around?

Prayer:; Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your Son, Jesus, and for the faith that You have given me that I might have faith that he is the Christ, that He is Your Son, that He died for my sins. And Lord, I thank You for giving me Your Holy Spirit, that I might have new life, that I might be assured that I belong to You and that I have eternal life. And Lord, I pray that this new life that I have might be evident in all that I do. Lord, forgive me when I dam the flow of the Spirit in my life. Lord, help me to keep in step with the Spirit, that Your love and grace may flow out of my life and into the lives of others. May Your living water flow from within me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
