Loving Jesus

Scripture: John 8:42, ‘Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here.”’

Observations: Jesus has been arguing with the leaders of the Jews about his identity and their refusal to accept his teaching. According to Jesus, if they were truly Abraham’s descendants, if they were truly God’s children, they would not only accept Jesus’ teaching and who he was, they would also love him. Jesus’ point is that if they did have the same Father they would welcome Jesus as their brother. If God was their Father, they would not only listen to Jesus they would love him. However, Jesus is building the case for his identity and will eventually proclaim that he is God (v58). If we are ever to have a relationship with God, we must not only believe Jesus’ teaching, we must not only accept that he is the Christ, we must also love him, we must give our lives in service to him, because he not only came from God (which is reason enough to love him), he is in fact God, who deserves and demands out total allegiance.

Application: Do you believe Jesus is who he claimed to be? Do you believe that Jesus is God’s Son, sent into the world to die on the cross for your sins? That’s all well and good, but do you love him? Do you love him as Your older brother who came into the world to make it possible your adoption as God’s children? Do you love him as the one who died in your place? Do you love him as the one who reconciled you with God and rescued you from an eternity of endless suffering? Jesus deserves your love, not just your belief.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I stand in awe of what Jesus has done for me on the cross. Lord, I thank You for sending him to die for me and pay the penalty for my sins, that I might no longer be separated from You, but that I might become Your child and receive eternal life. And Lord, I don’t just want to believe in Jesus, I don’t just want to follow Him, I want to love Him, I want to give my life to Him in grateful service. Lord, forgive me when my love for Your Son wanes, or grows cold. Fill me with Your Spirit that my love for Jesus will grow every day. In His name and for His glory I pray. Amen.
