My Rock of Refuge

Scripture: Psalm 71:3, ‘Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.’

Observations: Over and over the Psalmist describes God as his refuge, he calls God ‘my rock and my fortress.’ In fact, he refers to God as his refuge 3 times in this Psalm and a further 40 times throughout the rest of the Psalms. What does it mean that God is a refuge? Firstly, it means that God is a safe place. The Psalmist asks God to ‘give the command to save me.’ God provides salvation for those in need. Elsewhere he asks God to ‘rescue me and deliver me, (v2,4)’ and that God ‘will restore my life, (v20)’ and that God has ‘redeemed (v23)’ him. A refuge is a place one runs time for salvation. Secondly, it means that God is a secure place. The Psalmist says ‘you have been my hope, my confidence since youth, (v5)’ and ‘I have relied on you. (v6)’ God is someone in whom the Psalmist can hope in and trust. Twice the Psalmist asks that God not forsake him when he is old (v9,18). In fact, in life’s struggles and even in death the Psalmist trusts that God will give him comfort and honour and eternal life (v20-21). And because God is a place of safety and security he will praise him and declare his greatness to the next generation.

Application: Do you know God as a refuge, a place of safety and security? Do you know God’s salvation, deliverance and redemption in your life? Do you put your hope, confidence and reliance in God? Do you turn to God in your times of trouble and distress trusting that God will be there for you, that he will restore your life, that he will lift you up from the depths?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, so often You aren’t the refuge, the place of safety and security that I go to in times of trouble. So often I rely on other things for my sense of security. Lord, I ask that You help me to go to You, that You might be my rock and my fortress. Lord, lift me form the depths of my sin and my selfishness. Restore my life, make me like Jesus. Lord, I hope my confidence in You for there is no other hope but You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
