Planted in Life

Scripture: Psalm 1:3, ‘He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.’

Observations: The ‘he’ in this verse is the person who delights and meditates on God’s word (v2). Such a person ‘is like a tree planted by streams of water.’ It’s an image of strength, health and abundance. Trees that have a good water supply ‘yield their fruit in season and do not wither.’ You can go up to such a tree and know what you’re going to get, if it’s fruit season you will find abundant fruit, and even in the dry season it will be healthy and green. Like such a tree the person who delights and meditates on God’s word will prosper in all that he does. While the Psalmist is thinking of prospering financially, he would also be thinking of prospering spiritually, relationally, and emotionally. His relationship and trust in God will grow and develop, his relationship with others will strengthen, and his understanding of himself will deepen.

Application: If I want to live a fruitful life and be healthy and whole I need to learn to delight and meditate on God’s word. I need to make God’s word more central to my life. I currently do devotions approximately 4 times per week, and spend time in sermon preparation and Small Group study, but there are many days when I don’t open God’s word at all. I need to change that in my life. I commit myself to opening God’s word every day. I will read the Bible with my kids every evening after dinner. I also want to grow in the area of memorizing Scripture, so I will learn the kids memory verse every week. By the end of the year I will have memorized over 30 verses. What will you do?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I do delight in Your word, and I know that is a gift from You. But Lord, it doesn’t take the place in my life that it should. Lord, help me to love Your word more, and help me to meditate on it day and night. Lord, may I read it every day, may I commit it to my memory so I can recall it whenever I need it. Lord, may my life be like a tree planted by streams of water, may it be fruitful, may my life weather the winter with wisdom and grace. May I pass on my love for Your word to my children, that they too may be planted in Your word, that their lives too may flourish. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
