Recognizing Jesus

Scripture: John 1:10, ‘He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.’

Observations: The whole point of John’s gospel was to proclaim that God had come into the world through Jesus Christ. And even ‘though the world was made through Jesus, the world did not recognize him.’ The world didn’t know him for who he was. Even though God sent John the Baptist to proclaim who Jesus was they still didn’t believe (v6-9). Elsewhere in the Bible we’re told that without the Holy Spirit we can’t recognize spiritual truth, especially the truth that Jesus is Lord (1 Cor 12:3). In our spiritual blindness we will never see the glory of God in Jesus (2 Cor 4:6). The truth is that without God’s intervention we will never recognize Jesus for who he is. John goes on to say that the world did not receive him (v11). However, some did receive him, and God adopted them as his children (v12). But it’s important to note that they became Gods children not by ‘human decision’, but of God (v13). The fact that we recognized and received Jesus is all God’s work.

Application: Do you know people who don’t recognize Jesus for who he is? How do you change that? You won’t be able to change it just by telling them. Instead you need to pray that God will change their hearts and open their minds to understand the truth of the gospel. Of course you still need to tell them, but our words will only have impact when we say them with the power of the Holy Spirit. It’s also helpful to be aware of the Spirit’s timing, and wait for the Spirit to prompt us to share the gospel with people. Who are you praying for, and are you ready to share the gospel with them?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I know that You are the source of all life, both physical life and spiritual life, and if anyone is going to receive eternal life they will only find it in Your gracious hands. And so Lord, I pray for my family and friends who don’t recognize Your Son, Jesus, and who refuse to receive him as their Lord and Saviour. I ask that You open their eyes to see the truth, and that You open their hearts to believe in Your Son and His work on the cross. Lord, especially as we invite people to our Christmas Party, may Your Spirit work in people’s hearts so that they may hear the gospel and believe in Jesus Christ. In His name I pray. Amen.
