Remember God Today

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 12:6-7, ‘Remember him—before the silver cord is severed, or the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, or the wheel broken at the well, and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.’

Observations: In verse 1 Solomon tells us to remember our Creator in the days of our youth, and here he says, whatever you do remember God before you die. He gives four images of death, the severing of the silver cord, the breaking of the golden bowl, the shattering of the pitcher at the spring, and the breaking of the wheel at the wheel. All of these images speak of the finality of death. Once something is broken it cannot be repaired, its usefulness is at an end. The Bible says, ‘for dust you are and to dust you will return. (Gen 3:19)’ In fact, scientists suggest that once all the water is taken out of our bodies we’re left with only a few kilograms of basic chemicals. However, what scientists can’t measure is our spirit that ‘returns to God who gave it.’ Solomon is referring to ‘the breath of life’ that God breathed into people when he first created them (Gen 2:7). One day we will stand before God, and it will be too late to remember him then.

Application: The Bible says ‘man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment. (Heb 9:27)’ And that ‘we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. (2 Cor 5:10)’ Once you die you won’t get a second chance. You have the opportunity to serve God today, to bring him glory, and to remember his goodness and grace in Christ Jesus. Remember God today.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I don’t know the hour of my death, all I know is that You have given me this moment to give You glory and honour. Lord, I thank You for the life that You have given me, and I want to use it to serve You and grow Your kingdom. May I never forget Your grace, the grace You give me every day in so many ways, but especially the grace You have given me in Jesus Christ. When my spirit returns to You I know that it is returning home. Lord, help me to remember You today. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
