Remember Your Creator

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 12:1, ‘Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them.”’

Observations: The word ‘remember’ usually means to remember something form the past, but here we are to remember, or focus our thoughts on, something in the present, the one who created us. Solomon’s point is that we shouldn’t wait to think about our relationship with God, rather we should do so as soon as possible, ‘in the days of our youth.’ We should give our best strength, our best thinking, our best times to the Lord. So many people put off making a commitment for when it suits them, when things slow down, or when the kids grow up, or after we pay off the house, but God deserves to be first in our lives. Don’t wait until you become old because it doesn’t become easier. Solomon refers to old age as ‘the days of trouble,’ the days when we lose the pleasure of living, the days when our eyes grow dim (v2), our teeth fall out (v3), our hearing fails (v4), when sexual desire wanes (v5), and eventually we die (v6-7). Once we’re dead it’s too late to live for the Lord, we need to do it now.

Application: It doesn’t matter how old you are, the only thing that matters is have you remembered your Creator, are you living for God? Don’t wait until it suits you, rather give your life to Jesus today, and love and serve him with all your heart, mind and strength. Don’t look back over your life with regret at the fact that you could have done more for God and His kingdom. Especially if you are young, you have all of your life before you to live for Jesus, begin today.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, when I stand before You may I not be ashamed by my life, but may I be able to say, that by Your grace I lived my life for You, that I loved You with all of my heart, mind and strength. Lord, help me to live each day, in the light of Your grace, and may my life be a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to You. May I not put off my commitment to You, but help me to give my very best to You today. For the glory of Your name, I pray. Amen.
