Saved by Grace

Scripture: John 3:17, ‘For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.’

Observations: Everyone knows John 3:16, ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’ While John 3:16 talks about God’s love for the world and eternal life, John 3:17 talks more about the reason why God sent Jesus into the world. Firstly, Jesus tells us what his mission isn’t, God didn’t send him into the world to condemn the world. Jesus’ job isn’t to judge the world and punish it. In fact, Jesus goes on to say ‘whoever does not believe stands condemned already. (v18)’ Those who reject Jesus will perish. Elsewhere the Bible says that Jesus will return as the Judge of the living and the dead. Rather than condemn the world Jesus says God’s mission is ‘to save the world through him.’ God purpose in sending Jesus is so that Jesus would die as our substitute in order to atone for our sins.

Application: Like God sent Jesus into the world in order to save people form their sin, so Jesus sends us into the world in order to share the Good News that they can be saved from their sin through faith in Jesus. Our job is not to judge people, or condemn people, but to share the gospel with them. We leave the judging up to God in this life, and to Jesus in the life to come. As Christians our ministry is a ministry of grace, to treat people as they don’t deserve, just like God treated us as we didn’t deserve.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I want to thank You for sending Jesus into the world, not to condemn me as I so justly deserve, but to save me by dying in my place on the cross. Lord, as You have been so gracious to me, help me to be gracious with others. Protect me from a judgmental and critical spirit, and help me to reach out to others with the gospel, like Jesus reached out to me. May Your grace fill me and overflow into the lives of those around me. May I be gracious in thought, word and deed. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
