The Father Himself Loves You

Scripture; John 16:26-27, ‘In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.’

Observations: ‘In that day,’ refers to when the disciples will see Jesus again i.e. after his resurrection. In that day Jesus will no longer speak in figures of speech but will tell them plainly about the Father (v25). But Jesus wants to ensure them that while they pray ‘in his name,’ that doesn’t mean that the Father is distant from them. Because they love Jesus, because they believe that Jesus came from God, Jesus doesn’t have to ‘ask the Father on their behalf,’ rather ‘the Father himself loves them.’ Because they believe and love Jesus the Father loves them. While God loves us with a sacrificial love (agape), he also loves us as brothers, as family (phileo). We pray in Jesus’ name because Jesus has made it possible for us to approach God. But because of our faith in Jesus God loves us and longs to answer our prayers, he doesn’t wait for Jesus to bring our requests to him, rather in Jesus’ name because of his sacrifice our prayers rise directly to God the Father.

Application: Today remind yourself that God loves you, that He loves you like a son, like a brother. Remind yourself that because of what Jesus has done for you on the cross, when you pray in His name, your prayers are heard by God the Father Himself. Through faith in Jesus we are reconciled with God, we become his children and He becomes our Father. Talk to your Father today in Jesus’ name, because He loves you.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, it’s amazing that You sent Your Son Jesus into the world to die for my sins on the cross. It’s amazing that through faith in Him I have been reconciled with You. It’s amazing that in Christ I am Your son and You are my Father. Lord, may I never forget Your great love for me in Jesus Christ. May I never forget that You hear my prayers, and that despite my failings You love me. Lord, may I acknowledge Your presence with me today, and may Your Spirit comfort me and encourage me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
