The Gospel

Scripture: Psalm 103:10, ‘He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.’

Observations: As I said yesterday, Psalm 103 is probably my favourite, and this verse explains why. It is one of the clearest expressions of God’s grace in the Old Testament. The Lord ‘does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.’ The terms ‘sin’ and ‘iniquity’ are used interchangeably throughout the Old Testament, but if there is any difference it’s that ‘sin’ is falling short of God’s standard, whereas ‘iniquity’ focuses more on how we are guilty of wrong doing. The point is that we are all law breakers, and therefore we are all guilty before God and deserving of punishment. But God doesn’t treat us as we deserve. Instead the psalmist talks about the greatness of God’s steadfast love (v11), and how far he has removed our transgressions from us (v12), and how he shows compassion on us (v13). Of course in the New Testament we see the gospel in all its fullness. God removes our transgressions by placing them on his Son Jesus. God doesn’t deal with us according to our sins because Jesus has dealt with them on the cross. God doesn’t repay us according to our iniquities, because Jesus has already paid for them with his own blood.

Application: Do you know this God who doesn’t give people what they deserve, but who instead pours out undeserved love and mercy? Have you received God’s grace in Jesus Christ? Has Jesus taken away your transgressions, has Jesus dealt with your sin, has Jesus paid for your iniquities? Today you can experience complete forgiveness, complete freedom, and complete peace. You can know what it’s like to live without the stain of your past weighing you down. Just give your sin to Jesus and believe that he dealt with all of them on the cross, and receive God’s Holy Spirit who will help you live the new life you receive in Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I have sinned against You, I fall short of Your perfect standard, I dishonor You in thought, word, and deed. Lord, I deserve Your righteous anger, I deserve Your condemnation, what I don’t deserve is Your forgiveness, I don’t deserve Your love. And yet, because of Jesus, because he paid for my sins, because he died the death I deserved, I am now Your child. Lord, You have reconciled me with Yourself, You have given me not just a new life, but eternal life. And so Lord, I thank You, and I worship You, and I give my life to You. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit that I might honour You in all that I do. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
