The Lamb of God

Scripture: John 1:29, ‘The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’

Observations: The day after the religious leaders question John about whether he was the Christ, John sees Jesus and says, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’ The image of a lamb is a significant one in scripture. God provides a lamb to take the place of Abraham’s son Isaac in Genesis 22. God demands his people sacrifice a lamb in order to save their firstborn sons from the destroying angel in Exodus 12:1-13. God also demands his people sacrifice a lamb in order to atone for their sins (Lev 4:32). And Isaiah talks about how God’s servant who would take our punishment was ‘led like a lamb to the slaughter. (Isa 53:7)’ When John calls Jesus ‘the Lamb of God,’ he is suggesting that Jesus would fulfil everything that the sacrificial lamb stood for. It is not in the blood of lambs that our sin will be forgiven, but through the blood of Jesus Christ. The death of an animal can’t reconcile us with God, only God’s own Son is able to do that.

Application: John challenges us to see in Jesus God’s provision for our sins. The only way to be saved is to recognize that Jesus is the Christ, the One God anointed to pay the penalty for our sins. The only way to be saved is to believe that Jesus has indeed paid the price for our sins, that he died the death that we deserved. Only through Jesus are we able to be reconciled with God. Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ? Do you believe that he died for your sins on the cross in order to reconcile you with God? And like John are you proclaiming Jesus as the Lamb of God, telling others that he is the hope of the world.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, just like John the Baptist saw Jesus for who he truly was, so may I too see Jesus as Your sacrificial Lamb who has taken away my sins. Lord, like John may I also proclaim Jesus as the only way in which people can be saved. Jesus gave his life so that I may live and I want to give me life so that I can tell others how they can be forgiven and receive eternal life. Help me to say ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’ May the name of Jesus be praised. Amen.
